Double demerits in play this Australia Day
As Western Australians make the most of the first long weekend of the new year, motorists and other road users are reminded that double demerit points apply this Australia Day long weekend.
WA Police Force will apply double points, but not double infringements, to all speed, drink and drug driving, mobile phone, red light and seat belt offences.
“This is a particularly busy time on WA roads,” said Acting Commissioner Teresa Williams.
“Australia Day festivities and travel merge with families returning home from school holidays spent around the state, and we want everyone to get from A to B this long weekend safely.
“We remind drivers to be patient and courteous with other motorists and road users, avoid distractions such as mobile phones and noisy passengers, make sure you’re well rested before setting off and take regular breaks on longer journeys.”
Double demerit points
come into effect at midnight Thursday 24 January and will run until midnight Monday 28 January.
