Make your 2019 Leavers journey a safe one

The Road Safety Commission has collaborated with RAC WA to educate young drivers about Safe Vehicles ahead of the 2019 Leavers celebrations.

Thousands of students are set to descend on the South West this weekend as the traditional school leavers celebrations begin in Dunsborough.

The Road Safety Commission asked RAC Roadside Patrol Officer Cameron Dargan to provide novice drivers with advice on how to ensure vehicle is roadworthy before hitting the road.

“We want everyone to have a safe Leavers celebration, so we’ve got some basic tips,” said Cameron.

“Before we even look at the car, we want to make sure we have a licensed driver who is well rested and well hydrated before they even start the trip.”

Cameron guided novice driver Henry through a simple pre-trip vehicle check that the Road Safety Commission encourages all young drivers to follow.

“You want to be checking the oil and make sure that the coolant level is ok,” said Cameron.

“Make sure you’ve got washer fluid and the window wiper inserts are in a serviceable condition.”

One of the most important aspects of vehicle safety is the condition of the car’s tyres.

“Make sure that the tyres have got adequate tread on them and check the tyre pressure,” said Cameron.

“We need to keep in mind that if we’re carrying a bit of a load, you need to increase the tyre pressure a little bit.”

The Road Safety Commission website has more information on Safe Vehicles.

Leavers are encouraged to check out the 2019 RAC Pit Stop on Forrest Highway on their way back from celebrations to break up the journey and fight fatigue.
