Easter Blessing in Wanneroo
05 Apr 2017
A Blessing of the Roads ceremony in Wanneroo has been a timely reminder of the dangers on Western Australian roads, particularly during the Easter holiday period.
Road Safety Commissioner, Kim Papalia told the audience of emergency services, school children and local community representatives at the City of Wanneroo event, that the high volume of traffic over Easter made it doubly important that holidaymakers drive to the conditions.
A prayer and blessing at the intersection of Joondalup Drive and Wanneroo road was followed by local primary and secondary school children planting white crosses in front of a car wreck.
“Crashes can be avoided by slowing down, wearing a seat belt and being careful about drinking and mobile phone distractions,” Mr Papalia said.
Sadly, every cross reminds us of a loved one who will not be here for the Easter holidays.
The City of Wanneroo presented community volunteers with ‘Human Spirit’ awards for their contribution to road safety. The winners included traffic wardens and the Wanneroo RoadWise group which carries out free caravan and trailer checks.
