This Friday, 18 May primary school children around Western Australia are encouraged to take part in National Walk Safely to School Day, an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia.

The annual event, now in its 19th year, encourages children to walk and commute safely to school with their parents or carers.

National Walk Safely to School Day organisers said that walking to school with primary school age children reinforces safe pedestrian behaviour and develops vital road-crossing skills children will need as they become mature pedestrians.

The day also aims to promote the health benefits of walking or the use of public transport and the reduction of car dependency, air pollution created by motor vehicles and traffic congestion around local schools.
