Speeding

Speeding greater than the limits or the prevailing conditions contributes to an average of around 60 people of fatal police-attended crashes on Western Australian roads each year.

Slowing down is the single most effective and immediate way to reduce these statistics. If we all slowed down, our chances of crashing, being killed or seriously injured on the road, would dramatically decrease. Therefore, Western Australia has speed enforcement and penalties for those that go over the speed limit.

The information available on our website provides a simple interpretation of the law and is not intended to constitute legal advice. Full details of traffic offences and penalties are contained in the Road Traffic Code 2000.

New laws for speed cameras evaders

WA drivers caught driving a vehicle fitted with a device designed to evade detection by a speed camera are now subject to hefty new penalties.

A person must not drive a motor vehicle on a road if the vehicle is fitted with any device or other equipment that would prevent or adversely affect the operation of speed measuring and recording equipment or an average speed detection system.

  • When driving a heavy vehicle $1500 and 7 points.
  • When driving a motor vehicle other than a heavy vehicle $1200 and 7 points.
